Injectable Fillers

To get answers to the most frequent questions about injectable fillers, please select one of the links below:

What are injectable fillers?

Injectable fillers are among the most common non-surgical procedures performed in plastic surgery today. Fillers are materials that are injected into or under the skin to fill wrinkles and other defects.

Where are fillers most helpful?

Fillers are most commonly injected in the face and we find them most useful in its lower one-third. The nasolabial folds, which run from the base of the nasal tip to the frame of the lip, are the most commonly treated area followed by the marionette lines that run downward from the corners of the mouth. Dr. O'Connell also commonly treats the downward turned corners of the mouth and the "tear-trough" of the lower eyelid with a filler. Fillers are an excellent and commonly used means of augmentating the volume of the lips as well.

Which fillers are used at Plastic Surgery of Southern Connecticut?

The fillers that are most commonly used at present are the hyaluronic acid group that includes Restylane and JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel. Dr. O'Connell was part of the JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel "JET" trial.

Are fillers permanent?

Fillers persist for variable time periods depending upon the filler. Restylane, JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel, Radiesse and Sculptra are not permanent while ArteFill® is a permanent filler. We believe that it is usually advisable to begin with a non-permanent filler before proceeding with a permanent product.

Are there risks associated with fillers?

There are risks associated with all fillers. A thorough discussion of all risks, alternatives and potential benefits is an important part of the consultative process prior to undergoing any aesthetic surgical procedure including placement of an injectable filler.
