| Welcome to skincancersurgeons.com. The skin is the body’s largest organ and it functions to protect us from infection, temperature extremes, injury and water loss. It also stores fat, water and vitamin D, provides sensibility and regulates heat. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States affecting more than 500,000 Americans yearly. The purpose of this web site is to provide an educational resource that will assist our prospective patients with the diagnostic and treatment process for cutaneous malignancies. It is not intended to replace a face-to-face consultation with a plastic surgeon, dermatologist, your own doctor or other qualified physician. |
Skin cancers may occur anywhere on the body although eighty percent of skin cancers occur on the face, head or neck. While the majority of skin cancers occur in fair skinned individuals, anyone can develop skin cancer regardless of skin type or age; because of this, screening should be a regular part of routine medical care. Most skin cancers can be easily diagnosed by a dermatologist or other qualified physician, sometimes with a procedure known as a biopsy where a small piece of the lesion is removed and examined under a microscope. Most skin cancers can be removed by plastic surgeons and dermatologists usually without need for hospital care. At Plastic Surgery of Southern Connecticut, L.L.C., our goal is to assist you in the screening process and to timely diagnose and treat skin cancer with a minimum of scarring.
